For nearly a decade, I worked tirelessly alongside multiple animation teams as their animatic editor, animation editor, and finishing editor. The animation editor's role is often misunderstood since many people think that the animation comes out fully paced out, complete with dialogue and sound effects.
In fact, an animation editor is the central hub that connects multiple departments while also managing timelines and working with the director(s) to fulfill their vision of the project. On top of the editors normal duties of timing, pacing, and nailing the beats of each scene, they also compile the storyboards into a cohesive animatic while adding dialogue, sound effects, and creating the initial sound design. In some cases, the editor may fix lip sync issues with the animation or composite elements in a scene into a newly retimed sequence.
An animation editor's role is multifaceted and requires skills beyond what many think a video editor may do.
